Robert Frank captured this contact sheet, titled "Family in Provincetown 6," in his signature black and white film. He printed all the images from the roll together on one sheet. This way of working makes me think about process as the artwork itself. The dark strips between the frames form a grid that anchors the moments and spaces that Frank shot. The subjects are varied: landscapes, windows, and children playing. The surface has marks and scratches from handling, adding to the raw feel of the piece. Look at frames 14 through 20—you'll see a young girl in a tree, sometimes upside down, a study in fleeting moments. Frank's style is a precursor to artists like Nan Goldin, who also documented raw, intimate moments. In art, it's not about perfection, but about capturing something real.
