Editor: This is Yayoi Kusama's "The Passing Winter," a large cube made of mirror and colorful stripes, it's quite striking! The geometric patterns give it a playful yet almost dizzying effect. What do you make of this curious object? Curator: Oh, Kusama! I see a reflection of infinity and perhaps even a hint of childhood games, don't you think? The mirrored surfaces echo her obsession with the self and the cosmos. Editor: Yes, it does feel like a high-end funhouse mirror! Curator: Indeed, and isn't that the joy of Kusama? To find profound meaning in something seemingly simple. It makes you think about our place in the universe, doesn't it? Editor: It definitely does! I'll never look at a cube the same way again.

Looking into this cube, you see an interior lined with mirrors to create the illusion that the circles cut into its walls are receding into infinite space. The appearance of the interior is affected by external conditions, such as the brightness of the room it is in, and any surrounding colours which can be caught by the mirrors. The title may refer to the snow-like appearance of the floating dots, or suggest the transient, ever-shifting nature of the artwork itself. Gallery label, October 2016
