Spencer Finch made ‘Paths through the Studio’ with thread on paper. I wonder if he was thinking about how simple movements can construct a complex geometry. I can imagine Finch plotting his steps on a map of the studio floor, each colored line a route walked and retraced, a dance of wandering and returning. Each work has a clean, geometric structure, but the thread adds a tactile quality, transforming the whole installation into a kind of diary, the accumulation of repeated actions. There’s a visual and conceptual dialogue happening here, a conversation between line and form, movement and stasis. What does it mean to trace your steps? For me, it’s about finding clarity through repetition, making the familiar strange and vice versa. We are all just walking our paths through our studios.
