This is Johannes Jan Schoonhoven’s 'Square Relief with Diagonals' and it’s a very cool object! It's all white, like a blank canvas, but instead of colors, it plays with depth and shadow. I can imagine Schoonhoven, maybe in a meditative state, carefully constructing this grid. Each little square dissected by diagonals—it's like he's created a whole world in miniature. It reminds me of those endless pattern exercises that you can find in textile designs, or maybe some kind of futuristic city grid. There's something so calming about the repetition, but then the light catches the edges and suddenly there are all these new shapes popping out. Is the work a painting, a sculpture, or some kind of hybrid? It’s a bit Minimalist but also a bit Op Art, too. I guess this piece reveals the artist’s interest in seriality and the grid, reflecting a desire to find order and structure in artmaking. Anyway, it makes you think about the conversation that artists have with each other across time. It’s beautiful, right?
