Kees Stoop made this print of an artichoke, called 'Artisjok', with etching. It's interesting how the lines mimic the plant's form. Stoop is creating a kind of conversation between the real thing and its representation. This makes me think about the act of seeing itself. Look closely, and you can see how the etched lines define the texture of the artichoke leaves, like tiny grooves. It’s as if Stoop wanted to capture not just the look but also the feel of the plant. The lines are so deliberate, and the composition feels very considered, but also light and free. This piece reminds me a little of the botanical drawings of someone like Georgia O'Keeffe. Both have this ability to make you look at something familiar in a completely new way. It’s a reminder that art isn't about perfect representation but about opening our eyes to the world.
