This etching, made by Henry Nielsen, shows a landscape teeming with signs. The marks are tight, and the tonal range restricted to black and white, so that the overall impression is of a dense and intricate web. I imagine Nielsen bent over the plate, coaxing out this vision, wrestling with the acid, and inking the surface to reveal this strange space. What was he thinking as he drew those figures emerging from the tree? The procession of figures on the right feel ancient, iconic. It’s easy to see that Nielsen was an artist working during a time of great upheaval, and he sadly died very young. Like many artists, he leaves us this work, and in turn it is our work to keep his spirit alive. Artists are always in conversation with each other across time, feeding one another's creativity. The act of painting can become a form of embodied expression, where we embrace ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations rather than fixed readings.
