Robert Frank created "Paris 37A", a photographic work, sometime in the twentieth century. The work is like a painter's palette or a sketchbook page, a place for experimental gestures that may or may not make their way into a final piece. Look at the way the images are arranged on the page, a series of film strips, each a sequence of moments, all variations of a theme. What is the theme? Paris? Observation? Light? It feels as if Frank is feeling his way through the city. The greyscale palette heightens the sense of distance, of objectivity, but also a feeling of intimacy, like a secret whispered in black and white. Each image offers a fragment, a glimpse, and in their arrangement, they create a rhythm, a visual poem. Frank, like many other photographers, shares something with painters like Gerhard Richter, who also experimented with seriality and blurred focus, pushing the boundaries of representation. This piece embraces ambiguity, inviting viewers to bring their own stories.
