This is a photographic work by Robert Frank called ‘Angers—Trip to Spain A6’, it’s a black and white contact sheet of small images. I imagine Frank on his travels, pointing his camera, clicking, framing the world into these little rectangles. What was it like, I wonder, to be Frank in those moments, seeing through his eyes, making choices about what to capture? I like to imagine all the in-between moments, the stuff that never makes it into the frame, the fleeting glimpses of life that pass us by. I notice the variety of scenes he captured, from bustling streets to quiet interiors, each one telling its own little story. And the way these stories interact when they are placed together in this grid. Painters and photographers, we’re all just trying to make sense of the world, one image at a time, or one brushstroke at a time. There is a conversation between these images and my own work, a shared curiosity about what it means to be human, about seeing and feeling and being present in the world.
