Here is a sheet of black and white photographs by Robert Frank, depicting New York City at Christmas, though we don’t know exactly when. I can almost feel Frank holding the camera, his eye pressed to the viewfinder, capturing snippets of urban life. What was it like for him, wandering the streets of New York? Did he feel like an outsider looking in, observing the city’s rhythms and rituals with a detached curiosity? Maybe he was just trying to make sense of it all, one frame at a time. Each image holds a little piece of the story. Frank's photographs remind me of other artists who have explored the intersection of urban life and personal experience, like Garry Winogrand. They are all in conversation together, each building upon the other's work, influencing and inspiring one another's vision. Ultimately, art is an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, a form of embodied expression that embraces ambiguity and celebrates the beauty of uncertainty.
