This silver medal of approximately 5 cm in diameter was made by Philipp Heinrich Müller. The medal commemorates the military victories of the Holy League against the Ottoman Empire in 1697. On one side, we see allegorical figures of virtues leading Christian armies to victory. It embodies the political and religious tensions of its time. It reflects the fear of the Ottoman Empire’s expansion into Europe, representing them as a threat to the Christian faith and European identity. The choice to depict military events through allegorical figures presents a narrative about power, religion, and cultural identity. The medal itself becomes a symbol of triumph of Christian Europe over what was perceived as the 'Other.' It serves as a reminder of the historical and cultural narratives which have often been used to define European identity in opposition to non-European cultures and religions.
