This letter, "Brief aan Anna Dorothea Dirks," was written by Johan Huizinga in Leiden in 1918. You know, handwriting, it’s like a direct line to the brain. I wonder about Huizinga’s writing hand, was it quick, nervous, and urgent, or slow, deliberate, and measured? I imagine that Huizinga was very thoughtful, and dedicated time to the writing process. You can almost see him pausing, considering each word before committing it to paper. The slight variations in pressure, the way the letters tilt and curve—they give the whole thing a rhythm, like a dance. You know? I think that the letter form, the way we put words down on paper, is an art in itself, and has as much impact as the content of the letter. What do you think?
