This envelope was sent to Philip Zilcken sometime around 1924, and what strikes me is the handwriting, the way the ink sort of pools and feathers on the page. It's like watching thought take shape, each letter a little dance. The paper itself has a life, doesn't it? Torn at the edges, stained with time. And that cancelation mark, it’s like a little abstract painting, a circle of meaning, or maybe meaningless. I love the way the ink has faded and shifted, it tells a story of travel and of touch. You can see the mark of the hand, the pressure of the pen, the little imperfections that make it human. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, all those scribbles and layers, building up a world out of the simplest gestures. This isn’t just an envelope; it's a little time capsule, a whisper from the past.
