This is 'Overhandigen van kerstcadeaus in Shewasaulu, Zuid-Afrika,' a collection of photographs of what looks like a Christmas celebration in Shewasaulu, South Africa, pasted onto card by Willem Jacob van den Berg. The images, arranged on a blue card, are like moments caught in time. They remind me of flipping through old family albums, each photo a portal to another era. The texture of the photographic paper seems smooth. You can almost feel the stickiness of the glue used to fix them in place. Take a look at the handwriting beneath the images. The elegant loop of the script adds a personal touch, like a handwritten note tucked away in a drawer. It makes me think of Cy Twombly, not so much in style but in spirit. Both artists celebrate the raw and the intimate, inviting us to linger in the space between seeing and feeling. It’s about art as an invitation to see the world in a slightly different way.
