These sketches of sitting figures were created by Niels Larsen Stevns, a Danish artist who lived from 1864 to 1941. We can see them on a page of what looks like one of Stevns' sketchbooks. Stevns was working during a period of significant social change, witnessing both world wars and the rise of new social movements. With just a few lines, he captures the weight and weariness of women seated, perhaps resting or waiting. Are these women from his own social circle, or are they studies of anonymous figures encountered on the streets? The sketches invite contemplation on the everyday lives of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are a quiet testament to the importance of representing the diverse experiences and perspectives of those often overlooked in broader historical narratives. They offer an intimate, personal glimpse into the lives of women and their place within the society of that period.
