This blanket was created by Tangkhol, and now lives at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I want to wrap myself in it. It has this real handmade vibe—you can see where the weaver has been, how they’ve carefully placed each thread, almost like brushstrokes. Imagine sitting at the loom, thinking about the person who will eventually own this blanket, and how it will keep them warm, and be part of their life? There's a beautiful rhythm in those horizontal lines, how they stack up, and the colors are pretty simple, red, white and ochre, yet feel ancient, like something found in a cave painting. That little imperfection near the middle—is it a knot, or a place where the color shifts slightly? Either way, it gives the blanket a sense of life, that someone was right there, making a decision, and carrying on regardless. It’s beautiful! You see folk art or outsider art and it can really get under your skin – the sense of touch, of human agency and attention, is so clear.
