Rolf Winnewisser made this untitled print on paper sometime in the 20th century, layering loose grids, bright colours, and playful geometric forms. The process looks pretty intuitive; shapes are outlined with bold strokes, while some areas are filled in with solid colour, the red against the blue really pops. I’m really drawn to the way Winnewisser creates depth through layering and transparency. Look at how the red lines of the grid intersect with the black circles, creating a sense of overlapping planes. Then notice that strange grey area in the top corner, with those chaotic lines, it brings to mind Cy Twombly’s messy, scribbled surfaces. This approach reminds me of the experimental spirit of artists like Paul Klee, who explored abstraction and improvisation. It’s like Winnewisser is inviting us to play along, to find our own meanings and connections within this vibrant composition.
