This is an orchestral horn, or invention horn, made by Halary sometime before 1840. It sits in a box and it speaks to the burgeoning industrial revolution of 19th century Europe, and to the development of what we call the 'classical' orchestra. As a historian, I find myself asking how instruments like this shaped the music, and the culture, of the time. In order to understand the music, we need to understand the instruments, how they were made, who played them, and where. This involves delving into the archives of musical instrument makers, reading historical treatises on music, and examining the social history of orchestras and musical performance. Objects like this are more than just beautiful artifacts. They are windows into the past, offering insights into the social conditions that shaped artistic production.
