Editor: This is an untitled print by Christopher Le Brun. It looks like some kind of etching. I’m really struck by the textures and how they almost dissolve into each other. What do you see in this piece? Curator: I notice the labor-intensive process of etching, the way the artist physically manipulated the plate to create these varied textures. The stark contrast raises questions about the cultural value placed on printmaking versus painting, and the systems of production inherent in each. Did Le Brun view printmaking as a means to democratize his art? Editor: That’s fascinating. It makes me think about accessibility and who gets to experience art. Thanks! Curator: Indeed. Thinking about the means of production opens up entirely new avenues for understanding the work.
