Curator: This etching by Christopher Le Brun, held at the Tate, immediately strikes me as turbulent, a landscape of obscured forms. Editor: I see that too; the density of the material gives it a feeling of immense weight, of struggle. I wonder how Le Brun’s gender identity informs this grappling with the material? Curator: That’s interesting to consider, especially when looking at the aggressive mark-making and the erasure, the pushing and pulling of forms. Perhaps it is about the pressures of the artistic patriarchy on an individual identity. Editor: Yes, and the labor involved! Etching is physically demanding; the act of creation as a form of resistance against a system that privileges certain bodies and labor practices. Curator: Absolutely. It certainly gives depth to our understanding to consider the social and material aspects hand in hand, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Without a doubt, each informs the other. It provides a much more nuanced and complete picture of Le Brun's process.
