This anonymous 'Diaper Strip' at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, is a very long rectangle of white fabric with very thin red stripes. I can imagine someone patiently hand-drawing these lines, like a minimalist Sol LeWitt, but with a more human, utilitarian purpose. Think about the person who made it. They might have had a very specific role in their community, creating these essential textiles. Maybe they were thinking about their family as they worked, each line a wish for health and happiness. I imagine the repetitive motion was a kind of meditation. The red lines, so carefully drawn, almost feel like veins or lifelines. And the fringe edges add a tactile, almost playful touch. It makes you consider how craft traditions get passed down, each generation adding their own unique touch, inspiring one another. It’s a reminder that art is everywhere, even in the most unexpected places.
