This is Robert McGinnis’s poster for the film *Barbarella,* and it's kind of amazing to imagine how this collage came into being; images coming together, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with McGinnis. What might it have been like to create this? What was he thinking when he made it? I can almost feel the texture of the paper, the ink, the contrast between the matte paper and the shiny ink. The color palette feels very of the period, with its vibrant purples, oranges, and pinks. Those color choices shape our experience of the poster and contribute to its emotional and intellectual resonances. That bottom gesture of Jane Fonda in her boots and weapon communicates intention and meaning and tells us something about the film. Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. This poster embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning over fixed or definitive readings.
