Editor: Here we have an untitled piece by Allen Jones from the Tate Collections. It combines screen printing and collage and it seems to be playing with images of women. What do you see in this work? Curator: I see a commentary on the commodification of the female form. The fragmented collage elements suggest a mass-produced and consumed image, readily available and easily discarded. Consider the labor involved in screen printing versus the immediacy of photographic collage – how does that tension speak to the work’s meaning? Editor: That's interesting. So, the techniques themselves are part of the message? Curator: Precisely. The means of production mirror the societal forces shaping the image of women. Editor: I hadn't thought about it that way before. Thanks for the insight. Curator: My pleasure. It's all about looking at the nuts and bolts.
