S. Chompré made this little pochoir print, Femmes Modernes: Liggende vrouw op een bank, in 1926. The title suggests this is meant to be a modern woman, but there's also something kind of languid and timeless in the figure's pose. I’m really drawn to the way Chompré's uses color; it's almost as if they are inventing a new rainbow. Look at the way the colours create a sort of halo effect around the figure. The application is so flat and blocky, and yet, it creates a sense of depth and dimension. And it is a depth that has nothing to do with reality! The way the lines describe the hair—it’s like a dark sun or a celestial object, with all these lines emanating out from the center. I am reminded of the work of Erté, who was working at a similar time. Yet, Chompré has their own approach to this modern woman. Isn’t art great, so many approaches to one idea!
