Brian O'Doherty made this print, "25 Angled 1's on a 5 color 5 x 5 grid," using lithography, a printmaking technique based on the principle that oil and water don't mix. O’Doherty, who died in 2022, was an artist, critic, and novelist, who adopted the pseudonym Patrick Ireland in 1972 as a gesture of protest against the killing of civilians by British soldiers in Northern Ireland. His work challenged the notion of the gallery as a neutral "white cube," and he was deeply interested in the space between perception and reality. Here, the arrangement of colors and angled lines challenges our perception and plays with our understanding of patterns. The grid format itself is a culturally loaded symbol. It can represent order and rationality but also confinement and restriction. What social and political meanings do you see suggested in this abstract work? To understand the image better, you might research the artist’s writings on art criticism or the history of Irish conceptual art. Remember, art's meaning is always tied to its social and institutional context.
