This Untitled piece in the Tate Modern, was made by David Annesley. The colours seem like they’re almost playing a game of hide and seek, as though they’re unsure of what they should be. The painted surfaces, one grey and one green, are smooth to the touch, the physical presence of the materials is so immediate. It is not trying to be something that it isn’t. You know, like when your friend gets a new haircut and pretends they love it, but you know they are devastated?! The sculpture feels like a conversation between Alexander Calder and Ellsworth Kelly. It’s as if they were chatting about colour and form, then decided to create something together to keep the party going. It’s a generous piece of art, open to interpretation, inviting us to join in the conversation. Art isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about asking the right questions.
