Curator: Eva Rothschild's "Legend", residing in the Tate Collections, presents a striking interplay of geometric forms. Editor: It feels stark, almost menacing, with those sharp angles and void-like circles. What material is it? Curator: The piece is constructed from black steel. Considering Rothschild's broader work, I see this as an engagement with minimalist sculpture, but inflected with contemporary concerns around material and space. Editor: Steel gives it that industrial edge, a mass-produced feel despite its unique configuration. The negative space created by the holes transforms it; it becomes less about the solid form and more about the experience of looking through. I am struck by how this piece, like many minimalist sculptures, plays with perception and the viewer's physical interaction. Curator: Precisely! Rothschild prompts us to consider the social and cultural implications of geometric abstraction. Editor: Yes, it makes me think about how these materials shape our constructed environments and personal experiences. Curator: A fascinating intersection of form, material, and meaning. Editor: Indeed, something about the material and the simple geometry makes me think of bridges or other such public works.

Legend is a floor-based sculpture comprised of three triangular flat Perspex planes which are perforated by circles of various sizes and connected to each other by linear elements that zigzag around and between them, creating the optical illusion of a complex physical structure. Austere and fragile, the work functions as a drawing in space, neither abstract nor representational. Interested in the relationship between volume and mass, skin and structure, surface and edge, Rothschild creates forms which embody her fascination with the spiritual and ritualistic qualities of objects.
