This ‘Unpublished Print for Immaculate Conception’ was created by an anonymous artist, and looks like it might have been made with watercolour. There’s something beautiful in the way the artist hasn’t fussed over the details; there’s a raw, immediate quality in the application of the paint. The colours are muted, earthy, which gives the image a humble, grounded feel. It's like the colours are whispering secrets rather than shouting for attention. Notice the almost naive way the figure is rendered, especially the hands. They are so softly articulated, lacking strong definition, which lends the print a dreamlike quality. The halo is a standout, a burst of yellow rays that contrast with the otherwise subdued palette. This contrast draws your eye, inviting you to consider the spiritual significance of the figure. This piece reminds me a little of the work of Bill Traylor, in its simplicity and directness. It’s as if both artists are less concerned with technical perfection, and more interested in expressing something heartfelt. Art is, after all, an ongoing conversation, and this print contributes a unique voice to the dialogue.
