E. Boyd made this *Retabla of Holy Ghost* with paint on board, and the first thing that grabs me is its charmingly naive style, those flat planes of colour and bold outlines. It's like looking at a stained-glass window, or a Byzantine icon, but made with a playful, personal touch. The paint is applied in a simple way, no fancy blending here. Look at the Virgin's blue cloak, those confident strokes of colour, and the lilac dress – each area defined with a clear edge. It's so direct, almost childlike, but that's where its power lies. And that dove, right at the centre, nestled in her embrace, painted in delicate greys, as if emerging from the ether. Boyd’s commitment to traditional art forms, like this retablo, reminds me of Hilma af Klint's spiritual paintings. They’re both driven by an inner vision, a need to express something beyond the everyday. Art isn’t about perfection; it's about the messy, heartfelt journey of making.
