Johann Nepomuk Strixner created this portrait of an unknown man with a hat using metal engraving. Strixner lived during a time of political upheaval in Europe, marked by the rise and fall of Napoleon. There's a sense of quiet dignity in the sitter’s gaze, a look away from the present. The man is anonymous, yet he seems to carry the weight of history on his shoulders, a commoner perhaps caught up in extraordinary times. His face is lined with experience. Strixner made many portraits of German nobility, but here he makes an engraving of someone unknown. Was it a political statement in a time where class structures were becoming blurred? As you look at this portrait, consider who this person might have been and how his story, though unrecorded, is also part of history.
