This is a plate, part of a tea set, probably made somewhere around the 1800's by Petrus Regout. Look at how the colour is consistent across the whole surface, and made up of tiny dots or specks. It's like the pointillist paintings of Seurat, but in ceramic form. The texture is smooth, but the speckled surface gives it a visual depth. There’s something about the simplicity of the shape, the perfect circle, and the smaller one within, that’s very pleasing. I'm reminded of the work of Lucie Rie, another potter, who also embraced simplicity, and let the materials and process speak for themselves. There's a beauty in the everyday, in the things we use and touch. This plate is a reminder of that. It invites us to slow down, to appreciate the simple things, and to find beauty in the ordinary.
