Piero Dorazio made this painting, "No - Stop," and you can see the hand in it, can't you? It's not trying to be slick. There are so many stripes here, but the amazing thing is how each one has its own identity. Look how the colors shift and change! The surface has this almost velvet feel, like the colors are glowing from within, even though they are separated by black lines. Each line has its own character. Dorazio reminds me a bit of someone like Agnes Martin. Both artists create these mesmerizing patterns, but while Martin is all about quiet and calm, Dorazio is buzzing with energy, like a rave. It's a conversation across time, these artists riffing on similar ideas, but with totally different vibes. It is a reminder that art doesn't have to be one thing.
