Mountains 1985

Editor: Here we have Miriam Cahn's "Mountains," a large-scale work on paper currently at the Tate. The monochromatic charcoal and the sheer scale create a very dramatic effect. What strikes you about the composition? Curator: The linear perspective, although somewhat skewed, directs the eye forcefully. Note how the texture, created by dense, energetic strokes, defines form and evokes a palpable sense of mass and volume, especially in the upper register of the work. Editor: The strokes do feel very forceful. What's the effect of this choice, do you think? Curator: It's a study in contrasts, isn't it? Light and shadow, solid form versus atmospheric rendering... The artist creates an almost oppressive visual weight. These elements all contribute to a powerful, almost overwhelming, sensory experience. Editor: I see what you mean. I hadn't considered the contrast in textures so deliberately. Curator: Paying attention to how form and line interplay truly unlocks Cahn’s dynamic visual language.
