'Alamogordo' by Jules Engel is an explosion on paper using black and gray ink. Imagine Engel holding a brush loaded with ink, making quick, decisive strokes. I can feel the energy of the brushstrokes. There’s so much spontaneity in the lines. I wonder if Engel was thinking about speed, or the desert landscape. The paint isn't labored, but it's full of information. The way the ink bleeds into the paper creates a kind of raw, immediate effect. This reminds me of Franz Kline, but also Cy Twombly's gestural freedom. Artists are always in conversation, aren’t they? Each mark, each stroke, is a response to what has come before. It’s not about perfection, but about embracing the unexpected. It invites us to see painting as a space of possibility. It's alive and breathing!
