This is "Boekrol met daarop een kraanvogel, vaas met hagedis en kikker" (Scroll with a crane, vase with lizard and frog) created by Félix Hilaire Buhot. Notice how the composition is carefully arranged. A scroll on the left is mirrored by a vase to the right, with a crane and frog in the center foreground that grounds the ethereal quality of the piece. Lines define the shapes and forms, and the use of empty space creates a sense of depth and focuses our attention on the subjects. Buhot uses the visual language of Japanese prints, known as Japonisme, to challenge Western artistic conventions. He employs flatness and asymmetry, seen in the off-center arrangement of the scroll and vase, and also disrupts traditional perspective, creating a sense of visual tension and intrigue. Ultimately, the print invites us to question fixed meanings and embrace new ways of seeing, which Buhot achieves through the interplay of line, form, and space, which are not merely aesthetic choices, but a statement on the fluidity of culture.
