Regine Schumann's sculpture 'Swings' seems to hum with luminous energy. It feels as though the artwork has come into being through light itself, as if Schumann captured the essence of a neon glow and shaped it into these undulating forms. I can imagine her in the studio, experimenting with different filters and colored gels to create these shifting, ethereal effects. The artist may have asked herself: How can color and form combine to evoke the feeling of movement or sound? The edges glow with an otherworldly radiance, like something from a dream. It puts me in mind of those early light artists, like Dan Flavin. The waves echo the work of painters such as Helen Frankenthaler. It is as if the hard edge of Minimalism and the chromatic experimentation of Color Field painting have come together. It makes you think about the ongoing conversation that painters are always having, across time and space. There's something kind of magical about that.
