Editor: This is a house coin, or 'Huismunt,' dating from 1818 to 1859, commissioned by the Society of Welfare and currently held at the Rijksmuseum. The rough texture and simple inscription give it a weighty, almost primitive feel. What can we learn by observing its construction and features? Curator: Note the stark contrast between the smooth background and the raised lettering. Observe the form. On one face we see the initials ‘MVW’ stacked atop ‘1/2 C’; whilst the opposing face contains ‘GK’. Consider the incuse lettering; its forceful, clean lines offer a profound sense of order, directly at odds with the medium. Editor: That tension between order and medium is fascinating. The practical function clashes against its potential to carry significant historical meaning. But isn't this emphasis on form separate from what the artwork stands for? Curator: Not at all! One must engage with what one perceives with their own senses. The letters stand in for greater ideas. Ask yourself: What are the possible purposes of the simple inscriptions of a ‘coin’? Is there is an importance to consider within its purely geometric form? Editor: That’s given me a completely fresh way to look at everyday items. I was fixating on its historical background and the social context. Thank you! Curator: It has been a pleasure to consider this coin from an objective view of its internal qualities.
