This small, leaden coin, created between 1818 and 1859, is a "Huismunt" or house coin, used by the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid, a Dutch organization dedicated to social reform, for their penal colonies. The inscription on the coin, "M.V.W 10" indicates that it was worth 10 cents. The coin’s design features the initials "G.K." on the back, which are likely the initials of the colony where it was used. These coins were a unique aspect of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid's system of social control and labor in 19th century Netherlands.
