This letter to Philip Zilcken was written in 1903 by the English painter and etcher Ernestine Hadkinson. At this time, Hadkinson was living in London, part of a burgeoning artistic community. Written in French, Hadkinson explains to Philip, "You were so kind to answer me so quickly, if I have not answered you, here is why." She continues to tell him that she wrote to Mr. White, a friend and benefactor, but has not heard back because he left for Italy. The letter evokes a sense of distance and longing, as Hadkinson seeks connection amidst a network of friends and patrons. Hadkinson, though a successful artist in her time, has largely been written out of art history. Letters like these offer an intimate glimpse into the artist’s life, and allow us to consider the friendships and relationships which underpinned the art world in the early 20th century.
