Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan made this painting, Zvážanie dreva, with what looks like gouache or maybe tempera, and lots of paper showing through. The colours here are really interesting - high key, like a memory, or a dream. The paint is applied pretty thinly, in layers, and the drawing underneath feels really important, like a scaffolding. It's cool how you can see the artist figuring things out as he goes. Look closely at the figure's face - there's a kind of loose, scribbled quality to the mark-making that gives it a ton of energy. You can almost feel the artist’s hand moving across the surface, searching for the right form, and that searching becomes the form. I am reminded of Emil Nolde - he also knew how to evoke emotion through colour. It’s a reminder that art’s about seeing, feeling, and keeping the conversation going.
