Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan made this watercolor, Dedinský motív, probably pretty quickly, and with just a few colors. It's all about the wash – that lovely, translucent way that watercolor can just bleed and bloom on the page. There's a real tenderness in the way he handles the paint, the way the colors just seem to melt into each other. Look at the top left, where the pinks and blues just kind of kiss each other, creating this soft, dreamy atmosphere. And the way the darks hover above the scene, like a storm cloud – it's both ominous and beautiful. I'm drawn to the middle ground, where the artist renders what looks like a bench in a few, simple strokes. I love how the barest marks can evoke the real world, and how the artist trusts the viewer to do some of the work to complete the scene. It reminds me a bit of Milton Avery, who was also interested in the poetry of everyday life.
