Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan made this drawing, Horses in a Pasture, using pastel, maybe around the 1930’s. It's all about the feel of making marks, right? The horses are not carefully drawn but captured with quick, expressive lines. You can see the energy in each stroke, like Weisz-Kubínčan was trying to get something down fast, without worrying too much about details. The colors are interesting; a mix of pinks, greens, and yellows that create a kind of dreamlike atmosphere. They blend and bleed into each other, and it is like the horses are emerging from the landscape. Notice the horse standing in the center. The strokes almost seem to be coming from its chest, as if it is the very generator of the work itself. It reminds me a bit of Chaïm Soutine, who was also interested in capturing raw emotion and movement in his paintings. Like Soutine, Weisz-Kubínčan’s work feels both unsettling and beautiful, showing how art can be about exploring feelings more than just showing what things look like.
