Michel Blazy released snails onto a surface dusted with pigment to create this work. The artist invites chance and biological processes into art, challenging traditional ideas about artistic control. The snails act as co-authors of the piece, producing a collaborative, unpredictable outcome that celebrates the beauty of decay, chance and ephemerality. In this image, the snails have left white trails over a brown surface, creating patterns that evoke a natural landscape. The scene is reminiscent of the French conceptual art of the 1960s and 70s, which questioned the traditional role of the artist. Blazy’s "Lâcher d'escargot" continues this tradition by questioning what authorship and artistic creation means today. Further research into the environmental art movement and the history of institutional critique would provide a richer understanding of this work. Art history reminds us that an artwork’s meaning is always contingent on social and institutional contexts.
