Jacobus Harrewijn rendered this plan and cross-section of the citadel of Tournai in 1709. Note the star shape of the Citadel from above, an icon of military architecture, that echoes the layout of Renaissance ideal cities. This star motif isn't merely aesthetic; it's a dance of power and defense. Remember, fortifications in the shape of a star were designed to eliminate blind spots and offer strategic firing positions from every angle. I see echoes of the Vitruvian Man in this, the embodiment of perfect proportions and defensive strength. Yet, such geometric precision also resonates with ancient mandalas, symbols of cosmic order and spiritual defense. Does the citadel, then, serve not only as a physical barrier, but also as a psychological bulwark against chaos? The star's points, like fingers warding off evil, speak to our collective need for order and security. This symbol resurfaces, transformed, carrying layers of both worldly power and age-old yearning for protection.
