Karl Knaths made this painting, Geranium, with oil paint, but it could be crayon or colored pencil, it's hard to tell. It has a very handmade feeling, like something a child would do. I am drawn to the way the artist uses color to create a sense of depth and space. The blue and white patterned tablecloth feels almost fauvist, and makes a sharp contrast with the red flowerpots and green leaves. I love how the artist doesn't try to hide their process. You can see every mark, every stroke of the brush. It is clear that this painting was made with love and care. It reminds me of the work of Alfred Maurer, who also made paintings of still lifes and landscapes in a similar style. Both Maurer and Knaths were interested in exploring the formal elements of painting, such as color and composition, and they were not afraid to experiment with new techniques. Ultimately, art is all about play and experimentation, and this painting is a perfect example of that.
