Jasper Johns made this untitled work in 1972 from pencil and collage on paper. Notice how Johns combines drawing with techniques more aligned with craft processes, such as collage. The work is composed of four panels filled with different patterns and images. On the left, we see a colorful pattern of hatched lines. Adjacent to this is a tiled motif that is reminiscent of masonry or bricklaying. At the far right is a very different image. There is what seems to be a chaotic arrangement of wooden planks. Johns has used a variety of techniques to build up the surface of the image, combining drawn passages with collaged elements. Johns' artistic approach in this print blurs the boundaries between traditional art and craft. He invites us to reconsider our understanding of materials, making, and the social context in which art is produced.
