Editor: Here we have an Untitled mixed-media piece by Betty Parsons. The bold colors and raw textures really jump out at me. I feel like I’m peering into some kind of secret language, almost hieroglyphic. What's your take? What story does this tell for you? Curator: Secret language, I love that! It’s like peeking into the artist's soul, isn't it? To me, it echoes the raw energy of urban life—the unplanned beauty found in graffiti or a weathered billboard. See how the colours jostle, yet there’s a rhythm? What I find amazing about Parsons is her intuitive approach. Do you think this looks like a snapshot of the artist's subconscious, maybe her own secret city map? Editor: It absolutely does! The mix of hard lines and fluid shapes feels almost like a push and pull—like she's experimenting with chaos and order at the same time. The raw texture adds another layer; it’s not just a visual experience, it's tactile too. I’m also thinking of a personal reflection of everyday life...the artist takes me there and makes me think there is hidden geometry in everything! Curator: Precisely! It reminds me that abstract art can be a mirror. You bring your own stories to it, your own secret maps. Do you feel invited to write your own story over hers when viewing the piece? Editor: Totally, especially with abstract works, it becomes more of a collaboration between the artist and viewer. I now see abstraction is just an invitation! Curator: Absolutely! An invitation to a conversation that has been going on for over a hundred years... Editor: A conversation indeed! Thanks for untangling this work with me!
