This fashion plate called "Coquettes", was printed in 1923, and well, it's anonymous. What strikes me first is the absolute flatness of the image, a quality I find incredibly appealing. It’s like a stage set, a paper world where patterns collide without apology. The earthy palette of browns, reds, and greens feels so characteristic of its time, yet there’s something timeless about the way these colors interact. The overall texture is smooth, allowing the detailed patterns on the garments to take center stage. Look at the dress on the left, the way the red zigzags sit against the taupe, it feels so daring and modern. This piece makes me think of Matisse, especially his cut-outs, it has that same sense of joy and experimentation with form and color. Just as his work embraces ambiguity, inviting us to explore different ways of seeing the world. I wonder, is the artist having a conversation with Matisse?
