This fashion plate, Très Parisien, was made by J. Dory in 1923. It’s got these really graphic lines and then, bam, these bursts of color in the florals, a kind of process where control meets spontaneity, that is like fashion itself! Looking closely, you can almost feel the texture of the paper, right? And then, the colors, they're not blended, they're laid down, side by side, like you're building this world piece by piece. There is this black vertical stripe along the side of the dress on the left that’s so stark, but then softened by the riot of flowers blooming all around it. It's like a little rebellion against the rules. This reminds me of Sonia Delaunay, another artist playing with color and form. Like her, Dory invites us to see fashion not just as clothing, but as a vibrant expression, a kind of painting in itself. It is a reminder that art is always in conversation, remixing ideas.
