This is ‘Très Parisien, 1923, No. 1: Tissus de JERSIRIS…’, made in 1923, by an anonymous artist. It's an image that invites us into a world of style and elegance, a moment captured with delicate precision. The image has a staccato rhythm, like tiny beats, and it’s these marks that make up the whole. The paper is left bare, a kind of breathing space that allows the image to float. Then there's the black, a bold counterpoint to the lightness, grounding the composition. I find myself drawn to the area where the pattern of the dresses meets the plain background. It’s a subtle conversation between the decorative and the empty, a dance of presence and absence. The graphic sensibility reminds me of some of Hannah Hoch's collages, a similar play with form and texture. Ultimately, this piece reminds us that art is a constant dialogue, and that beauty can be found in the simplest of gestures.
