Here, we see an anonymous photograph, "Huizen en watertoren in Suriname" showing a landscape with a village and water tower. In this image, there's a real attention to texture, from the intricate foliage of the trees to the delicate, fluffy clouds in the sky. The choice of monochrome flattens everything into one single plane, but it also invites a closer, more intimate look. The large tree in the foreground dominates the shot, its massive trunk and spindly branches reaching out like a calligraphic gesture. The artist is using light, shadow and composition in tandem to create a mood, the result is quite somber, but there's also a quiet elegance to it, reminiscent of the work of someone like Eugène Atget. Ultimately, it's a poignant reminder of the poetry that can be found in the everyday, if we take the time to really look.
